Waterford Wine Estate invited 5 South African Architectural practices to design a new Beer-hall which will compliment their existing award winning wines, and we were privileged to be part of this list. From the outset, the Beer-hall had to compete with their award winning wines. We coined it as ‘’..let the wine snobs fight with the beer snobs..’’ which conceptually could all happen in the same space, 100m apart. The great mountain views from the farm and outdoor vibe, begged for a design that acknowledged both. Waterford exiting winery has such a strong architectural image, that the new building should not detract from this presence, therefore conceptually we designed a non-building. It had to be a roof floating in the landscape. We carefully grouped functions of brewing underground, and essentially designed a beer library or beer wall, with a overstretched counter, allowing visitors to the Beer-hall to merge with the landscape, whilst enjoying their favourite tastes.
